Over three years ago I had an idea for an Angel sculpture, serene and spiritual, aged and ageless. I wanted this to be a singular piece. Press moulded by hand, I work on each figure individually following with careful drying and the initial bisque firing in an electric kiln to 980°C. This prepares the piece for glazing and the thermal shock of the Raku firing. As the glaze firing is exciting, tricky and very smokey it takes place outside my workshop. I take the kiln up to 1000°C with a gas burner before removing the lid from the hot kiln and exposing the angel to the cold air causing the glaze to crackle. The bright orange hot angel is quickly plunged into damp sawdust and, during the resulting fire, the clay body and glaze crazing absorb carbon, giving each piece its individual and ancient appearance.
