Ceramics ‘Taster’ day

The Ceramics ‘Taster’ day has been designed to offer you an introduction to the world of ceramics and pottery, at the same time as enjoying the fun of handling clay.
Your day will begin with an informal introduction to the studio, followed by a demonstration from Penny of throwing on the wheel, one of the three basic ceramic making techniques you will be trying during the day. Each student will then be able to try this fascinating skill of ‘throwing’ a pot, with assistance, and those who wish can, later in the day, take it in turns to practice further on the wheel. After coffee you will be exploring one of the oldest hand building methods – coiling. We will be hand rolling or extruding coils and experimenting with form. Breaking for lunch and in the comfort of the house here at Clapper Yard, we can look at and talk about a collection of ceramics by well known potters. After lunch, Penny will demonstrate simple slab building and each student will, with suggestions and help from Penny, try this alternative making method.
The aims of the day are to experience and play with clay and explore the possibilities, not to produce finished pieces at this stage.
Formal tuition will end at about 4pm but students are welcome to work on for another hour if they wish. With a maximum of 6 people, the focus of the day will be on exploring your interest in ceramics, having fun with self expression a priority.
The day is open to all abilities, particularly beginners who wish to have a go at some basic pottery. You will enjoy a day trying something totally different, meet like minded people and find out whether you would like to explore ceramics further. Even if you have never touched clay before, with plenty of support, tuition and a combination of demonstration and practical tips, you will discover the pleasure of using your hands to create and mould forms in clay.
However it comes with a warning - it is addictive!
